How to Read a Color-Coded Quran Step by Step

Using a color-coded Quran doesn’t need to be complicated.

Step 1: Find the Color Key

Before beginning, look at the explanation provided at the beginning of your Quran.

This section should explain what each color means.

Do not assume that every color-coded Quran uses exactly the same system.

Step 2: Learn One Color at a Time

Don’t try to memorize every Tajweed rule on your first day.

Choose one color and learn the rule associated with it.

For example:

โ€œWhenever I see dark blue, I know that I need to apply the rule explained in the color key.โ€

Practice this until recognizing the color becomes natural.

Step 3: Read Slowly

A common mistake is trying to read too quickly.

When learning Tajweed, accuracy is more important than speed.

Read a few verses slowly and pay attention to the colors.

Look at the marked letter, remember the corresponding rule, and pronounce it correctly.

Step 4: Listen and Repeat

One of the best ways to improve Quran recitation is to combine visual learning with listening.

Choose a reliable Quran reciter and listen to the same verses you are reading.

Then repeat the verse.

The color tells you where to pay attention, while listening helps you understand how the rule sounds.

Step 5: Practice the Same Passage Again

Repetition is extremely valuable.

Rather than reading many pages once, consider reading a shorter passage several times.

For example:

  1. Read the verse while looking at the colors.
  2. Listen to the recitation.
  3. Repeat the verse.
  4. Read it again independently.
  5. Check whether you applied the colored rules correctly.

Over time, the process becomes more natural.
